Round Table: "Bonfire of the Vanity"

As fans sound off in our Gossip Girl forum on their favorite couples and story lines, our staff members gather each week to analyze the burning questions, funny quotes and other memorable moments from the best show on TV.

Welcome to the Gossip Girl Insider Round Table!

Topics from "Bonfire of the Vanity" include memorable quotes, absent characters, Jenny's career aspirations and two father-son tandems (the Rose and Bass boys)...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What was your favorite Gossip Girl quote from the episode?
DANdy: Blair's rattling off Cyrus' negative attributes, most of all that he's a hugger and has a catchphrase. It's hard to imagine worse if you're Blair.
Mister Meester: I loved Gossip Girl's NYC-themed film/literary name-dropping while dissing J: "Poor little orphan Jenny, looks like she needs a Daddy Warbucks, but Daddy Warbucks don't grow on trees. At least on a tree that grows in Brooklyn."
Gossip Guy: Funny enough the only line that really had me laughing out loud was Blair's "You used the everyday china. Cyrus will think we're just common upper-middle class." What an amazing spoiled brat. I so <3 you Blair. Chuck, bring your A game next week so I can return the weekly quote honors to you.
2. Will Jenny get her way with this emancipation plan, or have her fashion dreams gone up in flames?
DANdy: Yawn. Do all things J have to be boring and/or nonsensical? Why did she hook up with Nate? Why didn't she stop Agnes from torching her clothes? Where did she sleep after getting kicked out? This story line needs to get better or get auf'd.
Mister Meester: It's fitting that for all the attention paid to Gossip Girl fashion, Jenny should pursue a career in the industry. She just needs to lose the eye-makeup and '80s rocker look and give a little. In return, she'll get a lot of Rufus' support.
Gossip Guy: I hope Rufus steps up and embraces his crazy daughter's fashion dreams. Really Rufus, I'd like to think an artist such as yourself would understand. Sign the damn paperwork. Let her fail. At least she'll be at home for the obligatory "I told you so."
3. Which Rose do you prefer, Cyrus or Aaron?
Mister Meester: Definitely Cyrus. Aaron kind of sketches me out with his mind games, whereas Cyrus, while adept at out-Blairing Blair, has the best of intentions.
Gossip Guy: Eww. I like nothing related to Aaron. Now on the other hand, I knew Cyrus was a mastermind the second I saw him. Did Blair really think she could beat Vizzini, err Cyrus, at a battle of wits? That's a Princess Bride reference for people not as ancient as the Gossip Guy. Give it a rent.
DANdy: Am I missing something with this Aaron character? I keep waiting for the cool, charming artist to sweep Serena off her feet. Instead we've got a sleazy loser with a bad combover who sleeps around - yet still gets Serena in a neglige. Jerk.
4. Where were Nate and Vanessa?
Gossip Guy: First off, I'd like to thank the Round Table for giving me a Vanessa question. I was very nervous when she wasn't in the episode that I wouldn't be able to mention my utter disdain for her. I hate her. I suppose she was off being lame and working the coffee shop and having no friends because she sucks. A lot. Now on to my beautiful man-bangs friend, Nate. Hopefully he was apartment hunting. No man that good looking should have to live without running water and electricity. I got a couch if you need to crash, bro. We watch Gossip Girl every Monday night precisely at 8 if you're going to miss an episode again.
DANdy: Nate was likely with his mom or something, trying to get their situation squared away. Vanessa was likely hiding from my colleague Gossip Guy.
Mister Meester: I really kept waiting for Nate to emerge from an alley just when one of the other characters needed a friend. But alas, he must have been off doing his thing - brooding, combing his hair and chasing girls - on his own.
Chuck and Bart Bass
5. Will Bart and Chuck repair their relationship?
Gossip Guy: I really hope so! I truly believe in my heart that Chuck is a good person!  Do you see how hard he tries just to get his father's approval. And seriously Bart? I think Dan's pretty cool too, but if my son was Chuck I would embrace the hell out of him. And yeah, we all saw the picture of his mom. She was hot. Get over it. You have Lily now! Could a woman be any more beautiful? Time to get over it and love that awesomeness that is Chuck.
DANdy: The subject of Bart hating Chuck has never been properly explained, which even Bart seemed to acknowledge when he opened up to his son after reading Dan's story. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long-awaited reconciliation.
Mister Meester: The scene at the end was great and I'd love to watch that relationship grow, but if the funeral pics and the theories of many Gossip Girl fans are any indication, the Bass boys may not have much time left together.
    1. What was your favorite Gossip Girl quote from the episode?
    I would have to say that this one doesn't go to a quote, but more to an action. It was Dorota immediately putting out the ordinary china after seeing Blair's reaction to Cyrus. I actually nearly fell off my chair =)
    2. Will Jenny get her way with this emancipation plan, or have her fashion dreams gone up in flames?
    I actually like Jenny, and I really want her to succeed. But divorcing her parents? Way too far. What happened to the smart, polished Jenny? She seems to have been replaced by a dark-eyeliner-wearing, stroppy and rebellious slut. Not. Good.
    3. Which Rose do you prefer, Cyrus or Aaron?
    I. Hate. Aaron. Just had to get that out. He dates people other than Serena (strange man), and yet she still likes him (stranger girl). He is also never gonna be able to live up to Dan. So yeah, I like Cyrus. Mainly because he beat Blair at her own game =)
    4. Where were Nate and Vanessa?
    I agree with DANdy, vanessa was either hiding from Gossip Guy, or sticking her head in a hole. Nate was brooding in the Hamptons with his mum.
    5. Will Bart and Chuck repair their relationship?
    I really want them to, but it will be so sad if they just get to know each other, and then Bart dies (which he will do). Oh well, maybe it will make Chuck nicer (but I SO hope not :P)
  2. 143GG Says:
    Yes gossip guy you are 100% right!!! LMAO Vanessa is super lame! Maybe by some awesome twist of fate they'll have Aaron fall in love with Vanessa and we can be rid of the two lame-O-S! As for Serena, has she gone retarded. Geez I would have slapped this guy, or at least thrown a drink in his face for being such a self centered, self-righteous ass! I mean can they seriously expect us to believe he's better than DAN!!! He doesn't even come close. What's with the comb-over? He looks like he needs a shower. Gross! Hope Serena doesn't jump in the sack with him or she might catch something.
  3. Karina Says:
    This episode was not that crazy...how come last year Blair's birthday was such a big deal and this year it is very serious. Blair has changed and so has Chuck...I mean sitting and reading a book on Blair's birthday....last year there was a necklace and stuff and this year nothing..what happened?
  4. jlo Says:
    ok i honestly cannot believe that there was no C and B stuff
    its there 1 year anniversary i think we deserve SOMETHING!!
    I mean chuck was reading during the party??????????
    what is happening to gossip girl???
  5. jlo Says:
    oh and dandy totally agree with you about Aaron!!
  6. ann Says:
    i still think it's weird that:
    1. jenny didn't try to stop agnes
    2.that jenny woke up (where was that?she had no place to go!)
    3.that blair's birthday party was like 5 min. off the hole show and that chuck was not there:(
    4. that serena went away in a to short pyjama, who does that?
    i did not like this episode as you can see.
    hope the next one will be beter!
  7. Bianca Says:
    HAHAHHAA Canada gets gossip girl a day earlier then all y'all!!!!
  8. Bee Says:
    I was pretty confused about where all out C/B action had suddenly gone too, but Eleanor did mention that the party wasn't Blair's actual birthday, so it wasn't really their 'anniversary', so maybe he'll do something next episode?
    Or maybe not.
    And we'll all continue to wonder why [:
    I did like the Bart/Chuck part though, however, the fact that Bart knew he wasn't paying enough attention to Chuck did bug me.
    Surely if you're ignoring you're child you fix it, without some random kid ex of you're step daughter sending you letters.
    And Bart having so much time for Dan?
    That was just mean.
    Aaron is a fool, trying to make out like its the 'free' thing to do to sleep with everyone and date everyone.
    Serena, dude, that isn't cool or free, that's weird.
    He's playing her with all the art crap.
    V
    anessa is boring. Nothing to say about her.
    And my rant is over :]
  9. mj Says:
    hahahha to gossip guy all i could think about the entire eps. was when is he going to laugh and say that line about beating an italian when death is on the line or whatever haha. princess bride was like my fav. movie for years thank god someone else knows it besides me
  10. gossip_machine Says:
    1. I have to agree with "DANDY" when Blair was discussing Cyrus' love for hugs and his absolutely nerdy catchphrase. Priceless B.
    2. I'm kind of rooting for Jenny and her dreams of becoming a great designer. I myself have big hopes and dreams for the future. But it's really time for Rufus to step up and it's time for Jenny to understand that not everything is handed to you on a silver platter.
    3. I definitely prefer Cyrus over Aaron. At first, i thought that Aaron was going to be a great addition to the GG cast. He's hot, mysterious, and to my total suprise a completel douche. Serena needs to kick his ass to the curb officially... hopefully he won't be on the show for very much longer. But I love Cyrus! It's always fun to see someone out-smart Blair Waldorf!
    4. As for Vanessa I could care less where that loser was. But I was desperately craving a scene with Nate. Where has this sexy gossip guy gone to?? Guess we'll find out next week!
    5.i really want to see Chuck and Bart mend their relationship. But judging by mass amounts of rumors about the death of Bart Bass, it's not looking too good for Chuck. And it's definitely not looking too good for Dan if he runs that article he wrote... And while we're on the topic of Dan Humphrey... I wasn't digging him this week. He's turing into a selfish-douchebag.
