Tuesday A.M. Gossip Girl Reality Index

Below are some of the highlights from New York Magazine's review of last night's Gossip Girl, with the best (and worst) moments assigned scores via its "reality index" ...

  • Nate Archibald's cousin is called Tripp, and he was wearing a yellow sweater with elbow pads. Plus 5.
  • Why does everyone clap when Nate and his grandfather embrace at the reunion? Minus 2; real-life WASPS would pretend not to notice. Maybe they would titter and rattle the ice in their lowball glasses. Maybe.
  • We knew before that Lily has slept with Trent Reznor, but now we find out that she also did it with Slash! Plus 10, for the writers finally putting her groupie years closer to the eighties where they belong.
  • Interning for City Hall in high school is not "an amazing opportunity." It's a chance to fetch Mayor Bloomberg Swedish Fish from the vending machine. Minus 3.

B-Dubs

  • Blair Waldorf realizes she was headed straight for a "quarter-life crisis at 18." So true. And so like a hysterical overachieving high-schooler to realize that during the college applications process. Plus 2.
  • Wait, Chuck had Carter Baizen expelled from the secret gentleman's club? How? We desperately want that nonsensical and annoying plotline to get brushed aside, but that sort of felt like a rip-off. Minus 2.
  • Of course Dorota would cover for Nate and Blair, because she knows all too well Chuck is a bad influence and could bring out "bad Blair" again. Plus 4.
  • Why is there no one named van der Woodsen on Lily's list? WHO IS SERENA AND ERIC'S FATHER? Minus 2. Also, wait, where is Eric?
  • Dorota yells at Chuck in Polish after he tries to bribe her. We read on Gossip Girl Insider that what she said was "‘Are you crazy, you brat? I work for Miss Blair, not for you, what do you think you can buy me?’ Plus 4.

Plus 1,000 for the Gossip Girl Insider shout-out, New York Magazine!

I've totally wondered about Daddy van der Woodsen, but my best guess would be that he's dead. Only way it'd make sense for him never to be mentioned. Maybe he was gay? suicidal? or left/was left for someone else? Whatever happened, I would guess that it happened soon after E was born, and that he never played much of any part in S&E's lives or memories.

As for Dorota shipping our fave CB - here is the original interview with the actress who plays her:

    LMAO! Too true, too true...

  3. GJP2 Says:

I admit, I am one of those online watchers who paused on the list scene to check all the men, and was shocked to not see S and E's daddy. And, do you guys ever wonder how S and E never mention, or even look for their dad? What, is he dead? I mean, for an ex-party girl murderer, and a gay wrist-slasher, you would think that they would be all: "Mom, I wann see dad" by now. And, don't they supposedly hate mom for leaving them for Clause and Klause? Why aren't they questioning Lily about supposedly-named-Keith dad?!

And, yup, Dorota totally ships Chair, I think a few episodes bac, she was all, yep, go miss blair! fight for mr. chuck! -ish, I think this side of D was evident during the whole chuck downward spiral.

  4. Sarah! Says:

Chuck to the internet porn guy:
    "Big fan of your sites"
Classic Chuck! Best line of the episode.
    I give that a Plus 10.

  5. omFGGaga Says:

Lily's maiden name is Rhodes (see references to it when S's Grandma is in town - Cecilia (Cece) Rhodes). Her husband that was was S & E's dad was Keith van der Woodsen, at least according to the casting spoilers for the flashback episode/prequel spinoff about Lily's youth.
I'm guessing that at least the page that was held back was double-sided, making Lily's list 3 or 4 pages long, rather than a mere 13 names on a cue card. It would be interesting to know what the dates are for the L&R relationship, and later R/wifey and L/hubby... they are confusing things when the writers toss in references to just over a decade, 15 years, almost twenty years... and early 90's... S & D would have been born over 1990-91... so doesn't leave much 90's for their relationship...

"Why is there no one named van der Woodsen on Lily's list? WHO IS SERENA AND ERIC'S FATHER? Minus 2. Also, wait, where is Eric?"

  6. omFGGaga Says:

Wholeheartedly agree with "Wait, Chuck had Carter Baizen expelled from the secret gentleman's club? How? We desperately want that nonsensical and annoying plotline to get brushed aside, but that sort of felt like a rip-off. Minus 2." Erm, didn't Carter take Elle to the gentlemen's club to be bought off? Doesn't make sense that he'd be kicked out... how would Chuck wield any influence with the club anyway???

  7. OMFGGaga Says:

Have to agree with most of their scoring, save for the comment about Dorota covering for Blair. No way is their read on that right - the actress who plays Dorota ships Chair IC & OOC ;D Plus, she will have seen just how much Chuck has cared for Blair, how much he is looking out for her now, and how much B loves C. I think she doesn't want to hurt C (B always comes first, and her needs/wants), and/or doesn't think that N is upstairs and/or doing anything with B. Minus 10 to NYM for that idea.
"Of course Dorota would cover for Nate and Blair, because she knows all too well Chuck is a bad influence and could bring out "bad Blair" again. Plus 4."

  8. Mary Says:

I wanna know where Eric is too.

  9. Paulina Says:

I love Dorota and that she spoke Polish in this episode, ´cause I´m also from Poland, so it was funny to hear this :)

  10. K Says:

    S is right:)
