Before Penn Badgley and Blake Lively were confirmed as a couple, Matthew Settle, who plays Penn Badgley's TV dad on Gossip Girl, helped to keep gossip about their relationship secret.

But now that it's out in the open, he says, "I think it's nice."

Settle offered fatherly insight about Penn Badgley and Blake Lively on his way to The CW upfront party at The Bowery Hotel in New York May 13, which the Gossip Girl cast attended.

Asked if he had advice for his Gossip Girl son, Matthew Settle answered simply, "In real life, Penn rolls with the punches better than anybody ... I don't think he needs any advice."

About keeping the relationship a secret before it was revealed, Penn's TV Dad said he didn't "want to be too intrusive. I made my own assumptions. But I didn't want to talk about it, to get involved."

Just how realistic is Gossip Girl? Despite its awesomeness, not so much this week, says New York Magazine in its patented (nonsensical) rating system, which takes into account real and surreal moments from each episode.

According to the show's unofficial publication, this week's episode, "Woman On the Verge," rated -3 overall on the realism scale. Below are excerpts from this New York Magazine feature.

• The entire scene where Chuck, Nate, and Blair comfort Serena is realistic. They totally would have let the drama bring them all back together (which is what they secretly want anyway), and they would have definitely admitted all of their own foibles to try to make Serena feel better. Plus 5.

• Lily left her own rehearsal dinner - it couldn't have waited one day? And where was Eric? And why didn't Lily melt down like most normal adults who find out their daughter accidentally aided in a lethal overdose while in a drunken three-way sex situation? Minus 10.

• Chuck lost his virginity to Georgina in 6th grade? Awesome! Plus 4.

• Why is Dan Humphrey so gullible? He'll believe anything a pretty girl tells him! Her mom told her to change her name and get out of town? WHAT? A parakeet wouldn't believe that story! Minus 5.

DANdy: Yes. Dan Humphrey values honesty above all else. Serena has already misled him about never having inadvertently killed a man hoping for a videotaped threesome, while outwardly lying about cheating on him. Dan can't trust her ever again.

Mister Meester: Sadly, I think so. Serena drove him away, but the video Georgina's going to make of herself getting spanked by Dan will be impossible for S to forget, let alone forgive.

Gossip Guy: As I've professed in previous round tables, Gossip Guy <3's Derena. However, Serena has been treating Dan like poop. I don't care if she thinks she killed someone and Dan puts her on a pedestal. Dan is not only your man, he is the man. How can you not confide in him, Serena? Telling him you cheated on him with three guys? First off, gross. Second off, I want Dan to move on. Just don't move on with Sarah / Georgina!

2. What was your favorite Gossip Girl quote of the night?

DANdy: Chuck's response to Blair asking how he'd react if she knew where Georgina was: "Let's get the bitch," snarled in perfect Chuck Bass drawl.

Mister Meester: Any time the parents call Chuck Bass "Charles." Usually one's full name is reserved for occasions when one screws up. When you're a particularly bad seed, you get it all the time.

Gossip Guy: Oh this is easy. When each of Serena's friends in saying what terrible things they've done and Chuck simply answers, "I'm Chuck Bass." As much as I would have loved for Chuck to go over his laundry list of bad deeds, his name was merely enough. He's so deliciously evil.

As we discuss the terrific recent episodes and await next week's Gossip Girl season finale, it's never too early to start thinking about next fall and the amazing drama that is still to come!

Inside sources confirm that Gossip Girl will have an extra-long season next year, to make up for the ones missed this year due to the strike, E! Online reporter Kristin Veitch has revealed.

While nothing will be made official until next week when the CW announces its schedule in New York City, sources say Gossip Girl has been confirmed for 24 episodes for its second season!

Also, E! caught up with Leighton Meester on the set of Entourage (she's there shooting a guest stint for the HBO comedy), and Gossip Girl's Queen B said Gossip Girl will be in the Hamptons at the beginning of season two.

"Because you gotta go to the Hamptons, right?" she said with a giggle. "And, by the way, we aren't shooting in Staten Island like they did on Sex and the City. We're shooting in the real Hamptons."

Touche!

Leighton added that the cast calls Michelle Trachtenberg's character "Geor-gina" in the way that rhymes with a female body part.

Get it? Figure it out.
