The Tuesday Morning Gossip Girl Reality Index

Below are some of the highlights from New York Magazine's insightful and arbitrary analysis of last night's "Seder Anything." Comment and add your own below ...

  • Chuck Bass tells Serena van der Woodsen that he ran into Poppy Lifton at Rose Bar. Plus 1, because that's exactly the kind of place a New York socialite with a perfectly tousled Amelie haircut would hang out.
  • Nate got into Columbia "on his own merit." No. Minus 5.
  • Eleanor tells Blair: "Waldorf women are not socialites!" Plus 5, because of course she would say this. No one wants to be branded a socialite nowadays.
  • Blair tells the grandfather that "I think that's a decision he has to make on his own." Minus 5, because the woman who took down Georgina Sparks would have clearly had better control of this whole situation than that.
  • Tripp's fiancée says to Blair: "When it comes to these things, it takes a while to start to matter." Plus only 5, because while this is an awesome thing to say, if someone said this to the real Blair, she would have ENDED her.

The Fabulous Blair

  • Why would Jenny choose to entertain her new hipster boyfriend at the van der Woodsens' apartment instead of the Humphreys' Brooklyn loft? Minus 8.
  • How awesome was it, outside the limo before he dumped her, when Nate has to add it up out loud what Blair did to him in order to keep track? Plus 3.
  • Obviously, Serena would think she was married if someone put a popsicle ring on her finger and had sex with her on a bed with white sheets. But Cyrus would know better. You have to sign all kinds of papers and stuff in the U.S. Minus 10.
  • The subtlety of having Rufus carry Lily's Prada bags in an episode when he won't accept her offer to pay for Dan's schooling was not lost on us. Plus 2.
  • That coat Dan wore to waiter is far too expensive for him to afford. Minus only 1, because it's pretty, and for a while it covered up the vest that he pretended he was wearing for the first time but really he wears in EVERY episode.
  • Plus 8 for the unspecific way Dan Humphrey gets jealous after Serena confesses she got accidentally married to a dude after naked swimming with him in Spain, and the inarticulate way he explains said jealousy.

Nate and Blair vs. Chuck and Blair: Submit Your Argument!

Nate and Blair?

Chuck and Blair?

This epic love triangle (or quadrangle, if you now want to include Vanessa) has become the central component of Gossip Girl's terrific, if a little uneven, second season.

But regardless of whether you're a fan of either Nate and Blair or Blair and Chuck, we know you are passionate. And we want to hear your best arguments - for either.

The battle lines are clearly drawn, and the Gossip Girl spoilers offer conflicting reports (see below). What are you hoping will transpire this spring- and why should it?

Please vote in the informal poll below, then leave us comments making your best case for either couple. We'll publish the best responses in favor of both Nair and Chair before Gossip Girl returns for its final run of new episodes April 20.

Now is your chance! Stand up for your favorite couple!

The Tuesday A.M. Gossip Girl Reality Index

Below are some highlights (and lowlights) from New York Magazine's review of last night's Gossip Girl. Check out what they have to say and leave a comment with your own!

  • Serena and Blair end up shopping at Via Quodronno on the same morning. We'll buy it. And the chocolate-filled croissant that Jenny's not eating, too, please. Plus 2.
  • Wait, the Humphreys came from Brooklyn, had breakfast at Lily's, and got to school on time? What time did they have to wake up? Not Brooklyn time, certainly. Minus 3.
  • '96 Dom Perignon is fantastic. We've heard. Nice. Plus 2.
  • Chuck is always hanging around in Lily's living room in his smoking jacket, drinking by the fire. Don't other people, like, an entire family, live in that apartment? Minus 3.
  • Nate Archibald's email password has been "soccer" since the fifth grade. Plus 1 for Nate not even adding "09" at the end.

Rufus and Lily Photo

  • It's totally unrealistic that Lily would say she thought the party Serena put together for Jenny was "delightful" and act like Jenny was at fault for being ungrateful when Jenny had clearly, strenuously objected to having such a party the day before, and it was evident Serena was being an egomaniac. It is, however, realistic that Rufus would sit there like a lump while that was going on, so: Even.
  • Blair likens her situation with Nate and Vanessa to Brangelina and Jennifer Aniston. Plus 1, because every woman in that situation makes that analogy.
  • It's kind of annoying that Blair Waldorf has lost all her control in this episode. Minus 1. Someone give her back her headband of power!
  • Vanessa to Nate, about Chuck: "We're not a couple, it's just physical." Plus 2 because who knew V knows how to punch guys where it hurts?

The State of Gossip Girl

Are you feeling Gossip Girl these days?

We all love it, of course. Otherwise we wouldn't be here.

What we mean is, do you think it's heading in the right direction? The ratings are flat and some fans' angst about certain stories is getting louder with each episode.

Could TV's hottest, sexiest most glamorous, most buzzed-about show be succumbing to the country's larger woes and falling on hard times?

Most importantly, are the Gossip Girl powers that be getting worried? What does the network think of the recent episodes? Are they feeling your pain?

Sexy Gossip Girl Cast

Despite some recent strife among viewers, sources at the CW say there's no serious concern about Gossip Girl: "The storylines are so good," says a Gossip Girl insider.

"It was gone for so long they were expecting something amazing."

Personally, we felt the last two episodes were pretty solid, with "The Grandfather" the better of the pair simply because more happened. Are you in agreement or did you come away disappointed? What do you want to see by season's end?

Your arguments for and against certain romances or characters only help the producers know how to tantalize us in the future, so comment away.

What Did You Think of "The Grandfather"?

After so many promos and Gossip Girl spoilers, did last night's episode live up to the hype? It sure had its share of drama, there's no arguing that. Did you like it?

Tell us what you thought of the episode in the poll below.

Blair in The Grandfather

Tuesday A.M. Gossip Girl Reality Index

Below are some of the highlights from New York Magazine's review of last night's Gossip Girl, with the best (and worst) moments assigned scores via its "reality index" ...

  • Nate Archibald's cousin is called Tripp, and he was wearing a yellow sweater with elbow pads. Plus 5.
  • Why does everyone clap when Nate and his grandfather embrace at the reunion? Minus 2; real-life WASPS would pretend not to notice. Maybe they would titter and rattle the ice in their lowball glasses. Maybe.
  • We knew before that Lily has slept with Trent Reznor, but now we find out that she also did it with Slash! Plus 10, for the writers finally putting her groupie years closer to the eighties where they belong.
  • Interning for City Hall in high school is not "an amazing opportunity." It's a chance to fetch Mayor Bloomberg Swedish Fish from the vending machine. Minus 3.

B-Dubs

  • Blair Waldorf realizes she was headed straight for a "quarter-life crisis at 18." So true. And so like a hysterical overachieving high-schooler to realize that during the college applications process. Plus 2.
  • Wait, Chuck had Carter Baizen expelled from the secret gentleman's club? How? We desperately want that nonsensical and annoying plotline to get brushed aside, but that sort of felt like a rip-off. Minus 2.
  • Of course Dorota would cover for Nate and Blair, because she knows all too well Chuck is a bad influence and could bring out "bad Blair" again. Plus 4.
  • Why is there no one named van der Woodsen on Lily's list? WHO IS SERENA AND ERIC'S FATHER? Minus 2. Also, wait, where is Eric?
  • Dorota yells at Chuck in Polish after he tries to bribe her. We read on Gossip Girl Insider that what she said was "‘Are you crazy, you brat? I work for Miss Blair, not for you, what do you think you can buy me?’ Plus 4.

Plus 1,000 for the Gossip Girl Insider shout-out, New York Magazine!

Gossip Girl Spinoff May Cross Paths with The OC

The Gossip Girl spinoff may be a little East meets West, CW style.

As if exploring Lily van der Woodsen's roots via a Gossip Girl spin-off wasn't enough, Josh Schwartz may revisit an old TV family tree for his new pilot - namely, he might shake the branches of his previous teen drama, The OC.

Schwartz and co-creator Stephanie Savage are "toying with the idea" of having young Lily (to be played by American Dreams girl Brittany Snow) interact with teen versions of The OC's Kirsten Nichol and Jimmy Cooper, EW reports.

jimmykirsten

Tate Donovan and Kelly Rowan as The OC's Jimmy and Kirsten.

Does that mean Serena van der Woodsen and Marisa Cooper (Mischa Barton's old character) may have had (bitchy little) play dates with each other at some point?

Nothing is official yet, as the Gossip Girl spinoff is still at the pilot stage, but what do you think of this idea? Too far-fetched, or bicoastal genius? Who would you cast as young versions of The OC's elders? Any thoughts?

Josh Schwartz Dishes on Gossip Girl Spinoff

Gossip Girl head honcho Josh Schwartz spoke with E! Online this week about his man upcoming projects, including the Gossip Girl spinoff. Here's what he had to say:

Q: What's the skinny on the Gossip Girl spinoff?

A: We just finished shooting [the Gossip Girl episode that will serve as the spinoff pilot] and I'm really excited. I mean, you know obviously it's going to be out of my hands at a certain point in terms of whether it can move forward, but Brittany Snow is so good.

Q: She did kick ass on Nip/Tuck.

A: Funny. That's the footage that sealed the deal for me. When I saw her reel, and I saw the Nip/Tuck stuff and saw she could go to that bitch, badass side, I knew we had our Lily right then because eventually she's going to have to go there. She doesn't start off as that person, but she will become her.

Brittany Snow: The Young Lily

Q: Will the show focus on Lily and Rufus and Allison at all? Or Serena's father?

A: No, it's Lily and her sister Carol. Brittany and Krysten Ritter have amazing chemistry as these mismatched sisters and Andrew McCarthy plays their father, which is incredible. We also got No Doubt to record a cover of Adam and the Ants' "Stand and Deliver" just for the show. They're going on tour and they don't have an album, so this is the only new song that they've done. They performed it on the show and everybody, Gwen [Stefani] and the band, were just super into it.
