An Interview with Gossip Girl Producer Josh Safran

Gossip Girl begins its third season Monday, September 14, and Josh Safran, writer and co-executive producer of the show, talked about it with The Examiner.

There is much to discuss.

There is the kiss that launched a thousand Gossip Girl spoilers.

There is heightened sensitivity Safran, the show's only gay writer, feels towards gay themes. There is the story behind Gossip Girl's outrageous stories.

And the most scandalous of all: there are schemes to foil the leakers. Or at least to try. Here's the start of Josh Safran's interview, with links to the rest:

Q: The kiss leak is born from this new age of Gossip Girl spoilers, a relatively new phenomenon that's been building, but gained more traction this year.

NPR even did a story on them. Some people say that spoilers create great intrigue and some say they dampen a story's impact. What is your take?

Josh Safran: First of all, I was surprised [by the leak]. We never intended it to get out there, and we didn't want it to, either.

Blair Summer Fashion

I understand why they exist and some people like them and some people don't, and if you don't like them, don't look, but what I don't like is how it feels more and more like everything is being spoiled.

Like there isn't somebody going, "You know what? I have two pieces of information. Why don't I use one and not the other?"

Although not everything gets out, of course, it's sometimes hard to write stuff when you feel like "can we do this, or will it get out?" It's just troubling to us ... I wish that people gave a little more care to what they put out there.

Q: As you know, but some readers might not, Gossip Girl was developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage based upon books by Cecily Von Ziegesar.

In the books, Chuck was bisexual. Some fans have wanted to know why, in adapting Chuck's character for the show, he was not also written as bisexual.

Josh Safran: Chuck is not bisexual in the first book. The pilot mirrors the first book, and Josh and Stephanie drew from there for each character.

We've deviated from the books quite a bit, but it's important to state that there was never a "we don't want to make Chuck bisexual" conversation.

The book series was used merely as the launching point for the character of Chuck Bass, and the same is true for each of the characters.

Once the show was up and running, the Gossip Girl writers' room mindset, per Josh and Stephanie, was to "let the books be the books and let's use them where we can, but let's also make the series the series."

Also, you have to remember that when we started, the entire book series is a year of their high school life - their senior year. Josh and Stephanie made them juniors for the first season, so we couldn't even delve into the college stuff yet.

Now, we are far away from the books in a lot of ways.

Canadian Promo For "Reversals of Fortune"

Below is a slightly different promo for "Reversals of Fortune," the Season Three premiere of Gossip Girl, courtesy of our friends in the great nation of Canada.

It's slightly different than the U.S. promos for the September 14 episode. Our apologies for the poor quaiity, hopefully we can get a better version up soon.

Gossip Girl Returns to Blog, Dishes on J

Gossip Girl the show has taken a long summer hiatus.

Gossip Girl the blogger has, as well - until this week!

On Monday, she updated her official blog for the first time since May 19, saying "Miss me? I know you must have. Just how did you manage to survive without yours truly for two whole months? Where did you get all your gossip?"

Clearly she hasn't heard of Gossip Girl Insider, its spoiler section and forum. But we forgive Gossip Girl because she posted again Wednesday with some scoop on J.

Looks like the younger Humphrey is having a good summer and poised to rule the school when she returns to NYC. The show's anonymous title character dishes:

"Remember last summer when Jenny Humphrey was laboring away in a sweatshop, err I mean, at Eleanor Waldorf’s studio? Well, this summer, instead of ironing designer clothes, she’s wearing designer clothes."

"Jenny is living the good life in the Hamptons: lounging by the pool, dining at Nick & Toni’s and playing in doubles tournaments on the tennis court. Far cry from summers past when you were chasing after ice cream trucks on Washington Street, isn’t that right J?"

Ha. A little cold, Gossip Girl. But good scoop!

Will Gossip Girl Cross Over with The Beautiful Life?

It's not hard to imagine Blair and Serena front row at a hip fashion show or Chuck flirting with models. In fact, we've pretty seen variations of both already.

Does that mean a Gossip Girl crossover with the CW's new series, The Beautiful Life, is in order? The latter's producer, Mike Kelley, wants to make it happen.

While nothing is set in stone for the crossover right now, Mike teased a possible story he will be pitching to Gossip Girl executive producer Stephanie Savage:

Chuck and Sonya

"My idea - since these things happen - there are blackouts," Kelley says of the potential mega New York City CW event. "The idea ... is that we have two shows that exist in the same city, and our cast is on the subway, and their cast is on the subway."

"Then the subway shuts down. We don't even have to necessarily cross [cast members and plot lines]; we can simply tell two stories with them in the background during the same event, and maybe have one or two of the characters cross through."

Gossip Girl already featured a city blackout in "The Dark Night" last season. But hey, there was no subway involved, so perhaps they could revisit the idea.

What do you think of a Gossip Girl and The Beautiful Life crossover? Too gimmicky? Or an idea that could potentially be fun if done right?

Presenting: The Class of 2009 Gossip Girl Yearbook!

Some of you have seen this already, but we figured we'd pass it along for those who haven't, and because it's simply too darn funny not to comment on.

With the gang moving on to college and leaving Constance and St. Jude's behind, the CW created a Gossip Girl yearbook. It's very clever and well done.

2009 Yearbook

Like the show, the yearbook is a perfect blend of humorous and heartwarming. All of the pages are certainly worth viewing, but our favorite parts include:

  • What Chuck wrote on Serena's page
  • That Katy and Isabel got a page at all
  • S and B's entire page of LOL-speak
  • That while the other characters' pages are very personal, Nate Archibald's page is the most generic, uninteresting, boilerplate yearbook page ever
